Since concussion is defined as a temporary change in brain function, it is important to examine the patient on more than one occasion. It’s really important to wait until all signs of concussion have cleared up before returning to normal activities. Historically, concussions were graded based on the amount of time that an athlete was unconscious. Despite criticism by experts that returning to play on the same day as a concussion was dangerous, dozens of N.F.L. players have done so.
Normally, the fluid around your brain acts like a cushion that keeps your brain from banging into your skull. Right after the injury, your child may seem dazed, lose consciousness, or have a seizure (convulsion). Problems with memory and attention are the longest-lasting cognitive symptoms.
